What is pollution and how do we prevent it?
Some discharges are allowed if you have consent from the regulating local or territorial authority. The example in this picture is not allowed.
An example of an allowed discharge would be if you wish to discharge dust or fumes to air. You would need to determine the volume and the toxicity of the dust or fumes in parts per million. Then you apply to Greater Wellington Regional Council for a consent to discharge to air.
Discharges to stormwater are allowed if the water is clean and below a certain temperature.
Discharges to sewer are allowed under the HCC Trade Waste Bylaws, but you need to check if you need a consent. Consents depend on the type of liquid and the volume being discharged.
We've all seen examples of pollution; but how do we prevent it?

Discharge to stormwater
Complete the checklist, save it for the EMP and complete the quiz.
View the websites from the GWRC to see the different ways that pollution can occur.
-
Discharge to sewer
Trade Waste is a discharge to sewer and you need a consent from council to discharge over set volumes and types. Check with Hutt CC Trade Waste Officers.
See the link on the checklist for how to get consent.
Complete the checklist and take the short quiz.

Waste: Avoid this
Our landfills are filling fast and we need to re-think how we manage our waste.
What can you do to avoid waste – reduce, re-use, recycle?

How to create your EMP
Now you need to create your EMP that you will send to Hutt City Council. This document needs to include the information from your checklists. You can cut and paste the information from the checklists. Remember to save all the documents to your work computer.
